Venduehuis The Hague, 210 years

Venduehuis The Hague, 210 years

In May 1811, now 210 years ago, 69 notaries from The Hague met to draw up new rules for the auctioning of movable and immovable property. This was one of the requirements which Napoleon Bonaparte imposed on the Kingdom of Holland when he incorporated the country into the French empire. The meeting which led to the establishment of the Venduehuis der Notarissen in The Hague, became an almost pan-European event: French legislation applied to Dutch auctioneering and all of this in a chic, the Hague establishment that bore the name "The Parliament of England".

This means that this year the Venduehuis The Hague exists 210 years. It is the only auction house in The Netherlands still owned by the local association of notaries. Although we still reside in the beautiful original premises in the city centre of The Hague at Nobelstraat 5, some things have changed.

In those 210 years, Venduehuis The Hague has grown from a regional auction house to the largest in the Netherlands with a national and international clientele bidding from over 65 countries worldwide during our live and online auctions. Today we are proud to be a modern auction house that attributes its success not only to the consistent high quality of art objects on offer, but also to our strong eagerness to innovate, the expertise of our knowledgeable art specialists, and the trusting relationship with our clients.

The results of the recently conducted customer survey has confirmed this appreciation and recognition by our customers and the wider art circuit. The vast majority expressed an eagerness to come back to our auction house, would recommend Venduehuis The Hague to family and friends, and acknowledged us as the most trusted auction house in the Netherlands. We are grateful for the trust and confidence placed in us and keep expanding our capabilities to deliver best-in-class auctions and services to our customers and beyond.

Over the past 210 years in the history of Venduehuis The Hague it has been an honour to handle so many exceptional art objects, and to see their artistry and history so keenly admired by collectors and enthusiasts alike. The world-famous painting "Girl with a Pearl Earring" by Johannes Vermeer, the spectacular 120-metre-long “Panorama Mesdag” by Hendrik Willem Mesdag, and a shipping container painted by Keith Haring in the style of graffiti art are just a few of the extraordinary art works which were sold here at Venduehuis The Hague. They now take up their place in important national and international collections, museums or illustrious new homes where they are treasured and valued for generations to come.

With the highest sales results in the history of our auction house in 2020, Venduehuis The Hague’s leading position in the Dutch auction market is reaffirmed. With a team of 27 passionate experts and driven professionals across 12 different art departments from Old Masters to contemporary art, 210 years of history and expertise in art and antiques, Venduehuis The Hague keeps up with the times and is ready for the next anniversary.
