Auction results May

Last week were our Old Masters, Nineteenth Century & Early Modern Art auctions. With a sales percentage nearing 80% and total sales exceeding 2 million euros (excl. premium) in sales, we are thrilled with the results of these auctions.

A highlight of the auction was the sale of ‘Still life with pears and lemons’ by Pyke Koch (1901-1991). Partially thanks to several telephone bidders, this extraordinary painting sold for an impressive €185.000, surpassing both its low and high estimate.

We would also like to draw your attention to two beautiful early 20th-century paintings which were on offer during this auction: a charming painting by Isaac Israels (1865-1934), depicting a reading lady on a bench in the Bois de Boulogne, fetched €90.000, followed by a Dutch landscape of Zoutelande by Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig (1866-1915), which was sold for €65.000.

An eye-catcher in this auction was the collection of artworks by M.C. Escher (1898-1972). A highlight of this collection is ‘Trappenhuis’, a lithograph in which Escher’s ‘curl-ups’ are trying to find their way through a confusing stairway. This beloved artwork was sold for many times its high estimate, achieving a final price of €70.000.

Art by Old Masters also garnered a lot of attention, including ‘Liberalitas’, a painting by Abraham Bloemaert (1566-1651). The painting, with a personification of Liberality as a central figure, was sold for €56.000.

This successful auction shows yet again that Venduehuis The Hague is an important player in the Dutch art market and beyond.
