A drawing from 1952 by Yayoi Kusama graces the cover of this catalogue.

This unique work of art from the beginning of her career is an early example of her visual language. Kusama’s distinctive imagery springs from the recurring hallucinations that have haunted her since childhood but which she uses to great effect. In her hallucinations the world appeared as covered by dots and repetitive shapes, like an infinite starry sky. We are delighted to be able to offer this work, especially taking into consideration that Yayoi Kusama’s early history is tied to The Hague through her exhibitions in the Orez International Gallery.

Kusama’s drawing is joined by the works of many other renowned artists.

Twenty pieces by Man Ray from a private collection are a great example, and, following a successful year of auctions, are evidence that art collectors have discovered Venduehuis The Hague as an excellent place to bring their valuables to the attention of interested buyers.

Further, from the estate of the Dutch filmmaker Louis van Gasteren, we are pleased to offer several works of primarily Dutch art from the early 1950s, a highlight being spectacular gouaches by Lucebert which, after almost 65 years, are finally made available to the public.

Also by Lucebert is the monumental painting ‘Children’s Playground’ from 1961, one of the most impressive works in his oeuvre. It was originally purchased by the then director of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Willem Sandberg, for the Peter Stuyvesant Foundation, and has now found its way to this auction via a private collection.

The auction also features many excellent works for those who are more interested in the concrete art movements of the 1960s onwards, such as one with plaited paper strokes by the Dutch ZERO artist Henk Peeters from 1962 as well as several by Jan Schoonhoven, from the estate of the Dutch journalist and writer Betty van Garrel, from whose collection several artworks are on offer.

Another noteworthy object is a large neon work by the American artist Keith Sonnier. In addition, a small multiple by Sonnier is included in the publication ‘Seven Objects’ (1969), which also features famous multiples by Eva Hesse and Richard Serra.

The auction includes a broad range of photographs as well, among them an impressive portrait by the German artist Thomas Ruff .

Finally, we return to our local art history. We are thrilled to once again offer several works by Willem Hussem, whose art achieved record-breaking results in the last auction.

It is clear that Venduehuis is on the radar of an increasing number of art lovers, both buyers and consignors. We hope to welcome you, again or as well, to our viewing days and during the auction on 28 and 29 April 2021.
