We look back on a successful auction week with good results for our half-yearly Post-War & Contemporary Art auction and ‘The Lucassen Collection’ part I and II. More than 80% was sold, partially for top prices.
Post-War & Contemporary Art
I do not share my spirit, a painting by Anton Heyboer, was sold for the record-breaking amount of € 24.000 on Tuesday evening during the Post-War & Contemporary Art auction. This oil on canvas from 1976 was once gifted by Heyboer to Mathilde Willink when she sought help from him after her sudden divorce from Carel Willink.
A work by Belgium artist Joseph Ongenae, who spent most of his life in Amsterdam, also led to a new auction record. His wooden relief Building Blocks from 1964, was sold for € 28.000. The hammer price of Building Blocks exceeds the hammer price of Ongenae's works from last year’s auction, also at Venduehuis The Hague.
Buyers showed a reinvigorated interest in art from the mid-fifties and early sixties. Paintings by Dutch artists like Frieda Hunziker, Dolf Breetvelt, Sedje Hémon and Nicolaas Warb sold well above their estimates.
The Lucassen Collection
A noteworthy result in the hammer auction was achieved by Etienne Elias’ Belgium Coast (1969), which fetched three times its estimate with a hammer price of € 17.000. The public likewise showed a lot of interest in paintings by Roger Raveel, including Autumn Landscape of 1948, which sold for € 13.000. Two untitled works on paper by A.R. Penck also grabbed the attention, fetching € 13.000 and € 16.000.
The auction week closed on Thursday with part II of The Lucassen Collection, which presented a selection of works on paper and a collection of Tribal Art. A great selection of works exceeded their estimates, like art by Nikifor, James Ensor and Léon Spilliaert. A highlight was a painting by Willem Hussem, which doubled its estimate by selling for € 7.500.
